History Of Perfume!
Perfumes have a very long history. Though the word 'perfume' is of Latin origin meaning 'per fume' or through smoke, it was more widely known and used in the East. There are number of traditional households in the Middle East which are regularly perfumed. The way the perfume started to make a dent in the history of mankind is worth reading.
Perfume had its beginnings at least one thousand years before. During this period, it is widely thought that there were smelly aromatic compounds that were extracted from trees and herbs. These use to be collected as bark gums or resins. And they smelled wonderfully. This happened with trees like Sandal, myrrh and frankincense. There were a number of aromatic gums that people could identify for their thick smell. Some of them were pleasant while others though unpleasant, seem to have impacts that affected the working of the people. They made the place devoid of germs and insects. Certain others could cause specific relief to the people from ailments, like headaches etc. This made people to resort to such aromatic gums and start spreading the perfume at home.
This was the beginning of the perfume industry. However, soon it was only those smells that people loved which were called the perfumes. The rest moved into a quixotic mix of medicines and other cleaning agents. When we say perfume we only mean those beautifully smelling aromatics that are obtained mostly from plant source. Egyptians were one of the first to incorporate perfumes into their culture. But this practice is also noticed around the same time with the Chinese, the Buddhists and the Hindus. Around this period of the contact of the Egyptians could have spread the use of these aromatic compounds to the Israelites. But the people who really took to it are the Arabs. Their homes are still adorned a lot with perfumes. They still admire and use these as a part of their daily life. These smelly aromatics are liked both by the men and women of their society.
From the Arabs it spread to the Greeks and then to the Romans. Rest of the Europe too followed them after passage of time. All this ensured that the perfumes and their smell started spreading all across the globe. To this is one of the special category industries in the world. There are a number of branded businesses that run special perfumery. They invariably sell their products across the world as signature products promoted by people of large public presence and beauty that would stand as an example for the product that they are promoting. Now of course, these have taken different hues. There are personal perfumes and the air purifiers and for closed enclosures, there are specially made ones. Today these are made not from plant sources alone; they are also made from animal and from other petrochemical sources.
